Sunday’s walk (18 Nov) – Ben Venue

No apologies for including this one on the calendar again.  It’s a gem!  And this time with a twist (mebbe).

Speaking of twists, the name is apparently a corruption of Venebh meaning miniature.  Sort of hoping no gaelic speakers are reading this, but if so, then I blame WH.  (Though I might have made up the spelling.)

Woodland approach.  Maybe even some lovely autumn colours still on the trees then rocky at the top.  Plus you get 2 summits to play with!  From either on a clear day (which is what the forecast is currently saying!) the views extend to the Firth of Forth, the Clyde and Isle of Arran and the Paps of Jura. Good views can also be seen along Loch Katrine, Ben A’an, Ben More, Stob Binnein, Ben Lomond and the Arrochar Alps.  In fact, it is so beautiful that the view from the top was framed and hung on my parents’ wall when I was in short trousers.  (Honest.  That really was the case.)

So that’s Sunday – https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/lochlomond/ledard.shtml

The link shown here is to Ledard Farm but Loch Achray is also an option.  Let me know if you plan to come and we’ll see whether we’ve got the cars to go up one way and back down the other.  (That’s the twist – if you were wondering.)

Details to be confirmed nearer the day but lets plan for meeting at 9.30 so that we can have a 10 o’clock start.  2 summits and 2 routes!  What more could you ask for?

Arthur’s Seat & Sheep Heid – 2nd Dec

Ho ho ho all

It’s nearly time to kick off the festive season with the traditional yomp up Arthur’s Seat following by a late lunch at the Sheep Hied in Duddingston.   The sharp-eyed amongst you will have spotted that I am not Bill.  I am Bill’s not-so-glamorous assistant this year,  sending out the details and co-ordinating names and menu choices 🙂

I’m afraid I lack Bill’s literary flair so you’ll just have to make do with the basic essentials from me.

The game plan:

  • The date for your diary is Sunday 2 December
  • From 10am – drinks, cakes and silly hats at the cafe at Holyroodhouse.
  • 11.30am – head up Arthur’s seat for a singing and refreshments (BYO fizz or hip flasks)
  • 1pm(ish) – skittles and pre-lunch merriment at the Sheep Hied in Duddingston
  • 2.30pm(ish) – three course lunch at Sheep Hied
  • After lunch, the usual dispersal into town for those who want to continue festivities at the German market or at a hostelry.

You’re free to join and leave at any time.  If you want to join us for lunch – I need you confirm WITH YOUR MENU CHOICES by Friday 23 November.  I’ll be confirming numbers that night.

Sheep Hied Festive Menu

Just let me now and let’s get Xmas 2018 started!!

Sunday 4th – Beinn Each

Each to his own.

But not necessarily.  We can all go thegither.

But enough of this lyrical nonsense.  Sunday’s walk is a Corbett, Beinn Each – a shortish sharpish steepish climb up from Loch Lubnaig.  https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/lochlomond/beinn-each.shtml  This one will stretch the lungs!

Starting point is the layby on the east side of the A84 immediately north of the bridge over the Ardchullerie Burn.  Let’s meet there at 10.30 for an 11 o’clock start.
